For many travellers, hiking the Samaria Gorge becomes one of the highlights of their time in Crete. Located in the White Mountains, this remarkable natural formation stretches for around sixteen kilometres and offers one of the most famous hiking routes in Europe.
The trail begins high in the mountains and slowly descends through forests, rocky paths and towering cliffs. Along the way the scenery constantly changes, creating a dramatic journey through one of the island’s most impressive landscapes.
Perhaps the most striking moment arrives at the famous Iron Gates, where the gorge narrows dramatically and the cliffs rise steeply on both sides.
Local tip
Start early in the morning, wear proper hiking shoes and bring enough water for the journey.
